1. There are 2 choices; a clean installation or an upgrade. A clean installation is the option in which your data will be lost and UNRECOVERABLE. I don't reccommend an upgrade because it may slow down the computer's performance.
2. Some older programs which runs on Windows XP can run on Windows Vista. You can check the compability of the programs by using the Program Compability Wizard.
3. I don't know about this one=p.

Also, if you UPGRADE from XP to Vista there is no way to go back to XP without re-installing, which will dump all your files.

Well - only the files in the Vista partition will be lost. I save 'My Documents' to another partition, as a rule, than the OS is on, so they are kept when I format the Vista partition. Of course, favorites and emails have to be saved separately.

Well, yes. But read some of the horror story posts on here and you realize that the average user has no idea what a beta is, what an .iso is, what a partition is, etc... Do you think they back-up their data at all let alone on a regular basis.

Well, well... if they don't prepare for the cold water, let them drown in the unknown Lake Beta 2;-)

I sneer in their general direction...
